Where does Mother's Day originate from?

Mother's Day has roots that stretch back to ancient festivals and holidays, but the modern version of Mother's Day as we know it today originated primarily in the United States in the early 20th century. Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, is considered the founder of modern Mother's Day in the United States. After the death of her own mother in 1905, Jarvis began campaigning for an official holiday to honor mothers and their contributions to society. Her idea was to recognize "the person who has done more for you than anyone else in the world."

The first official Mother's Day service was held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Jarvis' efforts bore fruit when President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in the United States in 1914. The day quickly gained popularity and began to spread to other countries around the world, where it was often adapted to local traditions and cultural norms.

Although Mother's Day is celebrated on different dates around the world and sometimes with different traditions and customs, the essence of the day is the same globally: to honor and celebrate mothers and motherhood.

Mother's Day Around the World: A Celebration of Diversity

Mother's Day in the world

While Mother's Day in Denmark is an established tradition, it is fascinating to see how different cultures celebrate this day. For example, in Thailand, Mother's Day falls on August 12th, which is also the Queen's birthday, and the day is celebrated with great devotion and respect. In England, they have "Mothering Sunday", which was originally a church tradition, but has now become a day where mothers are celebrated with gifts and flowers.

Each of these traditions, wherever they take place, emphasizes universal love and respect for mothers. At Floranordica.dk we celebrate mothers with the Mother's Day Bouquet , but you can of course also see a selection of other bouquets and send one of them to your mother, someone who has been like a mother to you, and to all the mothers in your life.

Mother's Day is celebrated on different dates around the world, often with unique traditions and stories attached to each one. Here are some examples of how different countries celebrate Mother's Day:

United States, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium : The second Sunday in May. This is one of the most common dates for Mother's Day globally and was popularized by the American Mother's Day founded by Anna Jarvis.

United Kingdom and Ireland : Fourth Sunday of Lent, also known as Mothering Sunday. This day has its roots in a Christian tradition where people returned to their "mother church".

Norway : Second Sunday in February. Norway is a bit of an outlier, as it is one of the few countries that celebrates Mother's Day so early in the year.

Thailand : August 12, which is Queen Sirikit's birthday. The day is also a national celebration of motherhood in honor of the Queen's role as "Mother of the Nation".

Mexico and many other Latin American countries : May 10. In Mexico, Mother's Day is a very important holiday and is celebrated with great enthusiasm with gifts, music, and often a family brunch or dinner.

Poland : May 26. Mother's Day in Poland is a day when children often give their mothers homemade gifts and flowers.

France : Last Sunday in May, unless it coincides with Whitsun, in which case Mother's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in June. Mother's Day in France is known as "Fête des Mères".

Sweden : Last Sunday in May. In Sweden, Mother's Day includes gifts and breakfast in bed for mom.

Argentina : Third Sunday in October. Unlike many other countries, Argentina chooses to celebrate Mother's Day later in the year.

These dates and traditions reflect the diversity of ways in which different cultures honor mothers and motherhood.
